It is common to have yeast infections in body parts that are warm and moist. Although the skin is efficient in blocking all kinds of yeast, cuts or breakage of skin allows the fungi to penetrate the human skin. This leads to infections which can cause discomfort and local inflammation among human beings. In more serious cases, it can even be life threatening. Generally, the diaper areas and the mouth are affected in babies, while adults can have oral yeast infections with age. In adults, the nailbeds, lower abdomen and other skin folds are also affected by the infection.

Children between the ages of 3 and 9 years can suffer from yeast infections. These are generally found around the mouth and can be seen as white patches. But this is not a common condition and the infection is mainly observed in adults. They are superficial in most cases and can be easily treated both in adults and children. However, there are also chances of systemic candidal disease. This refers to yeast infection which spreads to all parts of the body and causes critical illness that cannot be treated. It often becomes life threatening and kills about 75% of the patients.

The human immune system and other naturally occurring microorganisms in the body prevent the growth of Candida yeasts which cause yeast infection. But due to the external use of detergents or other irritants, or due to some hormonal or physiological disturbance, the body may not be able to prevent the growth of Candida yeasts. Eventually, these lead to the multiplication of the fungi. A number of reasons ranging from pregnancy to the use of antibiotics have been found to be the cause of yeast infection. Even hormone replacement therapy has been found conducive for the onset of the infection.

Anti-fungal drugs like topical nystatin, topical clotrimazole etc. are used for treatment of yeast infection. However, the dose administered on a person depends on the severity of the disease as well as the area infected. Sometimes home remedies are also used for treating the discomfort caused due to the infection. The infection may not be cured by medication if it is related to other factors which need to be cured. The recurrence of yeast infections can be considered as symptoms of serious diseases like diabetes or AIDS. Therefore, proper treatment and timely medical attention is required for curing the infection.
